The Road to Freedom

I know that post title is a bit dramatic, but that’s how I feel.

Some of you know what’s been going on with me, but most don’t.

I was feeling stuck and stagnant.

Suffice it to say, something had to change, and it turns out- we are leaving Austin & hitting the road!

It was always my dream to move back to Austin.  Going to college here, there was no better place…and in so many ways, that is still true.  Austin is a town with a big city feel.  Great restaurants, great music, big festivals, rad people.  I will miss it so.

But the other part of Austin was the traffic, the mosquitoes and the weather had been sucking!!!

There was also other drama…

I know most people will think we are crazy for giving up what we have in Austin.  And it is no small thing.  We built a life here with friends and neighbors we love, a house we made a home over 3 years…and yes, the house was amazing.  (see I’m already using past tense).  Beautiful lines, amazing light, badass pool and pool house and roof decks…

But the house isn’t what makes the home, it’s the people.  Our favorite memories here will be with all the people we love, and with our dogs!  and we can take all of that with us when we leave.

More and more I’ve been asking myself, ” Do we need all the ‘stuff’?” Is that going to make me happy?

I understand both rapidly growing minimalist and tiny house movements.

So we’re leaving it all behind, selling our beloved home, and we’re gonna shack up in our Airstream and travel the United States and Canada over the new few months.

aquahaus is gonna take on a whole new meaning… from almost 3000SF to just under 150SF!

Over the next few months, I’m hoping to re-discover parts of myself I lost, spend time with my amazing husband and puppy babies. We’re taking the Road to Freedom…

  1. I’ve done this! A few years ago my husband felt like he was in a rut, so we picked up our lives in Calgary and traveled for four months living in our travel trailer before landing in Texas. It was great, but also difficult at times. Good luck on your adventure!
PS, are you having a garage sale??

    1. So cool!! Well, yes, we are having a garage sale. This Saturday in fact!!

  2. I’m sure you will have a lot of people to see in Houston, but we’d love to see you while you’re here! Happy trails, friend. Enjoy this great adventure!

  3. I can’t quite tell your plans in the southeast from the picture but i highly recommend fitting in Nashville and Charleston if you can!

We are friendly here and so much to do/eat/see :).

    1. We both love Nashville and have been previously. But Charleston is definitely on the list!! Thanks for the suggestions!!

  4. What a fun journey! I hope you both find what you’re looking for and remember your mission when times get tough. Wishing you the best and looking forward to following along!

    1. Well said Anita! I’m sure there will be times when we need to remind ourselves!! Thanks for the support!

  5. Good for you guys!!! Sounds like an awesome adventure. I hope to see you along the way somewhere! Happy travels.

    1. Thanks so much Carrie!! Too much we never did host you guys here. Are you guys making a move?!

  6. I’m so excited for you!! And I TOTALLY get ya. What a change it can be too. Would love to hear of your plans for afterwards 😉

I’m really hoping our paths cross one day. It’s hard to find RV’ers that are into design as much as I am!

    1. Me too!! We will have to try and meet up somewhere!! Love what you’ve done to your RV. Looks fantastic!

  7. You’re totally missing Denver! We’d love to show you around! Although we will be in Western Colorado and Moab in early August for some camping and CO wine country action.

    1. Hmmm…yes, we can’t seem to make CO. But if we miss it this time, we’ll hit you up the next!

  8. Columbus has some amazing eats and arts district… Just saying 😉 and you should Google “Hocking Hills” 1 hr from downtown Columbus (where we house it up) when are you planning on leaving?!

    1. I’m so excited!! We leave 7/13. Would love love to meet you guys. We will try!

Good luck with your journey… my husband and I sold our 2000sf house a few years ago and ended up in a 320sf apartment for the first year or so afterward. For me the adjustment was not entirely positive, but streamlining does give you a chance to reprioritize and refocus your intentions. Maybe it should be: aquastreamlineUSA?

Bon voyage, safe travels, and deepest wishes for a wonderful experience!

  10. I really hope we get to meet up before y’all head out on this grand adventure! I’m so jealous. We’re having to push back our tiny house build a bit and it’s got me bummed out. We ARE thinking about going the trailer/RV route though for a bit so I’ll definitely be picking your brain once you’re on the road. As a Northern California girl, def. make time for a drive up the coast to Bodega and The Redwoods. It’s a pretty magical little place. 😉 Xx Good luck and safe travels on the road, can’t wait to follow along.

  11. Stop in pittsburgh! A great small city with big town amenities. Great green space and rivers!

  12. Don’t miss Traverse City, Leelanau, and Saugatuck in Michigan! My fave spots.

    1. Okay!! We will definitely hit these up!! Can’t wait, and sorry we never met while we were both here! xo

  13. Santa Barbara!!! Not sure if it’s an official stop for y’all, but if not, it should be! Texas holds a very big piece of my heart, but this town is truly a gem and I may never leave. Would be a shame to pass through! Happy Trails 🙂

    1. YES. We are def going to SB. Do you recommend a place in particular for dinner? Thanks!

  14. This post in so very, very inspiring. My husband and I are actually in the midst of a similar life change. We are currently in a 3bd/2ba rental house in Atlanta (after living in small apartments and duplexes in Los Angeles and then a brownstone in Chicago) our housing situation has continued to grow larger and we, of course, have continued to accumulate more “stuff”. We are actually downsizing in August. From a 3bd/2ba house to a 1bedroom apartment. Over the course of the next few weeks we will go through everything we own, donate items, sell some times and really re-assess whats important to us and what we actually “need” in order to be happy. Then, we will start the process of buying or building a small home somewhere that will house our reduced amount of things. Im so very excited about this new adventure and am glad to know there’s someone else embarking on a similar journey. I cant wait to follow along in your travels!

If you hit up Los Angeles or Atlanta during your journey, let me know. We split our time between the two cities 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. It is comforting to know that there are like minded people out there. “Happiness” is always evolving. We will definitely be passing through LA…would be fun to meet! xo

  15. Hi Celine – new follower, love it all…including this new adventure! If #13 is Mpls/St Paul, pls hit me up! Would love to meet and show off our great cities!

    Best of luck!

    1. Thank you so much Tracy!! We are definitely hitting MSP!! So I will hit you up! xo

  16. Celine this is so exciting!! How fun and refreshing! I second who ever wrote to stop in saugatuk and traverse city. We used to live in Michigan and those are must see places. Also, I am originally from SLC/ Park City area in Utah, do you need recommendations there? Xo

  17. This sounds so liberating (and brave)! I hope you get as much out of your adventure as possible! Best of luck.

  18. While you’re buzzing through Montana (I assume Glacier and Yellowstone?) you should make a pit stop in Missoula. Like Austin with better summer weather and 1/10 as many people. The drive from Glacier through the Flathead/Lake Country area is also beautiful. Don’t miss the Flathead cherry roadside stands!
