Hi! Welcome back to the One Room Challenge hosted by Calling It Home! A bananas awesome event where you makeover a space in 6 weeks.
To make this utterly difficult for myself, I chose to remodel my master bath in 6 weeks. Fortunately, it’s small and we are not changing the footprint.
So what to show you this week?
Well, a fair amount of the shower tile was laid.
You can also see the penny tile in the shower pan, as well as the crazy red concrete subfloor.
Penny tile. Such a simple tile yet so difficult to lay properly. If you don’t lay it properly, you will see gaps and the individual sheets. See in the shower pan?
There are a couple tricks to combat this. 1. You have to remove alternating tiles on adjacent sheets so they “lock” together. 2. You have to use dark grout.
The gaps are too easy to see when you use a light grout.

You can see the seams because the penny tile isn’t perfectly aligned and the grout is white. It’s magnified in pictures, even more than in real life.
Needless to say, I’m using dark grout.
What else?
The tub has arrived and it’s awesome.
Now, I need some serious help with the Chandy over the tub.
Which would you pick? Is bubbles over the tub too literal?
Inquiring minds want to know.

You’re right – penny tile can look so bad. A few years ago I installed two solid walls of penny tile in our guest bathroom – it was a massive effort to not have any of those weird spaces! And yes, matching grout helped. 🙂 All your lights look so great but I think #1 might be my fave!
Okay, I’m feeling SO much better about the couple of spaces I can see the lines between the sheets in my pantry. It annoys me in the photos, but for the first time tiling on my own, I’m glad mine is at least as good as the bad pro shots you shared 🙂 ANYWAYS, your bathroom is looking fabulous and I’m obssessed with the black penny tile. I love all the lighting options, but #3 draws me in the most. It’s like a hint of bubbles over the tub without being too theme-y.
Definitely agree that the tiling can be a challenge. Can’t wait to see how this turns out. 1/2 way there!
I’ve learned so much about the intricacies of tiling after working with installers on a lot of jobs now. And the more I learn the more I say to always hire it out! My vote for the light is #2, because I think it’s not the most obvious choice and one of your talents is bringing fresh ideas to spaces. But if #2 isn’t the winner then my next vote is for #3.

This bathroom is going to be amazing and I love what you’ve done so far! I love me some copper but I think #3 would be perfect above the tub. Then again, you can’t go wrong with any of these options, so I can’t wait to see what you choose!
